This is a REAL opportunity for REAL people to make REAL impact. Please do not respond if you don't thing that this is something that you can commit to for REAL.
We are SIGMA THETA THO, a fraternal organization that was birthed from The 1City Youth Project, a non-profit youth organization in Brooklyn, New York (www.1cityyouth.org). SIGMA was formed because 1City only serves youth in grades 4 to 12. The family bond of being part of 1City was so real, that once the students "aged out" of the program, they approached 1City to create something new that would take them into adulthood. Recently incorporated, SIGMA THETA RHO now has approximately 20 members who live in New York City, Nigeria and Virginia. Our goal is to take the organization globally.
We are looking for men and women (ages 18-45) to pledge our fraternity and be part of this dynamic new organization. In order to pledge, you commit to working on community service projects and to building relationships among social, academic and professional horizons.
From July 1 to May 1, 2010, you have to accumulate 116 points in order to be "crossed over" into membership.
You gain "points" by answering email, attending and participating in community service events, meetings and activities. When doing service activities and attending meetings, points are given comparable to the amount of time you spent at that activity. That's all! No hazing, no embarrassing activities. The work is real and the bonds that are formed among all of our members is equally as real.
Here are some of the activities that we will be working on....
1. The planning of a charity basketball game between SIGMA members and 1City alumni and 1City alumni vs. Themselves (The Throwbacks vs. The NuJacks). The proceeds will benefit the continued reach of 1City AND the establishment of a Private High School.
2. The planning of a 1980s Themed Party. The proceeds from this event will benefit the continued growth of Sigma and Shriners Childrens Hospital (or other deserving charity).
3. The planning of a Christmas Celebration for 1City which will include a coat drive, adoption of a family and a holiday party for 1City's kids. We will also put together care packages for two soldiers and a youth group home resident.
4. Development of a recreational and basketball and dance/step program to benefit at-risk youth. Some of "y'all" are going to have to play and/or step!
6. Tutor kids and conduct test prep programs.
7. Plan and implement workshops and seminars that may be of interest for kids and the general community.
IN THE MIDST OF ALL OF THIS, WE WILL ALSO:
1. Play basketball with the kids on Fridays starting in September. Some of the women in our organization are starting a step/dance team too.
2. Go on a weekend camping trip and POSSIBLY a cruise around Memorial Day weekend.
AND SO MUCH MORE!
When we convene again in September, we meet at a local public school in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn - not far from the "A" / "C" trains.
To start the process you must --
1. Send an email to onecity2007@yahoo.com with YOUR NAME - PLEDGE 2010 in the subject line.
2. Write a short paragraph telling us a little bit about yourself and why would think being part of our organization would be a good match for you.
3. A sentence or two telling us what you intend to get out of the program Please also tell us what you bring to the table.
THANKS FOR YOUR INTEREST!!
